PADDING ALONG THE dirt road towards the town of Rainwillow, Kris held tightly to the saddlehorn. Her horse, Bear, a fifteen-three hands high strawberry chestnut Thoroughbred stallion. He tossed his silky mane to-and-fro in the soft breeze, the old Victorian buildings and the shops all rustling. Their mimicking red-brick walls and medium-thick windows with their white-washed panes, all like they were brothers and sisters.

KRIS RAMAGED THROUGH the old photo albums, her eyes scanning the crinckled photographs and letters. Her heart sinking at the site of her mother's picture when she first got married to her father, tears whirled in her eyes like a Russian ballerina on an ebony stage. Her mother had died of a mysterious, life-threatening disease three years ago, when Kris was only eleven. Now she was fourteen, depressed and unwilling. Her older sister, Lexi, was off living with their father in New York City. She was seventeen, only three years older but more mature.
